Obituary for Barbara M. Phillips

Barbara Marie Phillips was born at Harlem Hospital, New York City, NY on January 6, 1953 to Ronald Hopper and Clara Phillips. She graduated from Saint Dominic’s School in Blauvelt, New York where she excelled in mathematics, softball and swimming. Barbara attended Tappan Zee High School in Orangeburg, NY, before returning to Harlem in 1970.

She was blessed with a large and loving family. In her years before retirement, Barbara served as a homecare aide. She had a knack for quietly serving others: to her twin sister, Beverly, she was a truth teller; to her sister, Daisy, she was a humorist and to her brother, Frank, she was a confidant.

Ms. Barbara--as she was affectionately known—stood as an earnest and humorous person who enjoyed the respect and love of her community. She always enjoyed life’s simplest pleasures. Whether engaging with family, friends or children, she found joy and shared happiness. Barbara enjoyed long walks, crossword puzzles and math.

Barbara is survived by her partner David Cooper; her children Michael and Kerryanne Phillips, and Katrina and Alhagie Touray; her grandchildren Shariah, Khamar, Alhagie, Michael Jr, McKayla, Devin; her siblings Beverly (twin sister), Daisy and Frank; and her cousin Cynthia. She was preceded in death by her grandparents, Ernest and Daisy Phillips; her stepfather, James Lee Allen, her mother, Clara Phillips; her aunt Louise; her sister, Denise; and her cousins Ernest, Harold and Frank. Barbara passed peacefully on February 26, 2022, with her family by her side.

We thank God for allowing us to share the wonderful time within her dash.
