Obituary for Deborah D. Alexander

Deborah Deloris Oliver-Alexander, affectionately known as Debbie, was born on September 16, 1953.

She was the eldest of eight children of the late Junius Oliver and the late Sadie Mae Degree Oliver. Debbie was a proud graduate of Charles E. Gorton High School. She furthered her education at the college of Mt. St. Vincent. Shortly after college Debbie embarked on a career path that would fuel her passion—working with children. From working in a daycare to pouring out her love into older children at Leake & Watts, Abbott House, The Children’s Village and Green Chimney, Debbie shaped the lives and hearts of thousands of people. This love was visible in her home and community. To her two children Kayvonne and Robert, and her grandchild Khadeja she was an example of strength, love, power and perseverance.

She was also beloved and respected as the “community mom.” Despite her professional career, she was most proud of her children and grandchild. Her oldest child and only daughter, Kayvonne encourages us all to remember the full life Debbie lived and all that she was passionate about—like traveling, cooking, crochet and generously caring for those she loved.

Debbie is survived by her daughter Kayvonne Oliver, a son Robert Alexander III, one grandchild Khadeja Oliver, a bonus daughter Alissa Atwood, her sisters Kathleen Bussey, Phyllis Carroll, Alesia Middelton, Allison Oliver, Iris Oliver, a brother Jeffrey Oliver, a host of nieces and nephews and “bonus” sisters Marie E. Grosett, Aline Pulley, Antionette Green, Vertelle Davis, Francine Rogers and her “God children” Tamira Campbell, Jessica Bussey, and Marvin McKinley. She was preceded in death by her sister Adele Dillon and her first son Eric Lee Oliver.
