Obituary for Eugene McCabe

Eugene McCabe of Yonkers, New York died peacefully in his home, surrounded by his family, on May 1, 2023 ending a long, fulfilling life.

Eugene "Gene" was born on January 27, 1925 in Magheracloone, Co. Monaghan, Ireland to Thomas and Kate Mary McCabe. In 1955 he boarded the SS New York and headed for the United States. He was grateful to his Uncle Joe Farry for guiding him to employment at New York Telephone (Verizon) where he worked for 33 years.

In September 1958, he met Maureen (Mary) O’Donnell at the Jaegar House dance hall. They were married in 1960 and raised their 7 children with a strong work ethic and connection to their Irish heritage. A devoted husband, Gene cared for Maureen with love and devotion through her long decline with dementia. Maureen passed away on May 28, 2020.

Gene prioritized time with family and friends. He took great pride in his home and enjoyed spending Sunday afternoons watching the kids in the pool, reading the paper and listening to the Irish program on WFUV after Mass. Over the years Gene and Maureen hosted many backyard gatherings filled with Irish music, dance and laughter. In recent years a highlight of his week was meeting his buddies at a local diner for the craic. He enjoyed trips to the Catskills with his son, often meeting old friends in the Shamrock House. An avid sports fan, he followed GAA football and the New York Giants.

Gene was a proud Monaghan man and a member and past president of the Ancient Order of Hibernians Division 17 in White Plains. He was also a member of the Monaghan Society and marched up Fifth Avenue in the St. Patrick’s Day Parade for decades.
