Obituary for Helen Theresa Smith (Russell)
Helen “Cherie" Theresa Russell Smith age 96 died of natural causes on Saturday,February 27,2021 at her home on Bronx River Road,Yonkers,NY where she lived since 1950.
Cherie was born in 1925 in Yonkers,NY. and graduated from Gorton High School in 1943 where she developed a life long love of the French language and culture. Cherie married her high school sweetheart, Leslie Smith Jr., who predeceased her in 2003.
She was a life long parishioner of St. Barnabas Parish,Bronx, NY.
Cherie was a beloved and devoted mother to her six children:Lesley Kawejsza,Joanne Smith Ahearn,Priscilla LoRiggio,Gregory Smith,Bradley Smith,and Hillary Smith. Her pride and joy were her five granddaughters:Kristen Kawejsza,Katelyn Doerner,Nicole Rende,Lauren Smith,and Morgan Smith and her four great grandsons:Finnbar Rende,Nicholas Rende,Thomas Doerner and Theodore Doerner.
Cherie was always a lady of fashion and high style. She had a love of learning and she instilled that in her children and their children. The essence of Cherie can be summed up in four words:sweet,gentle,kind and loving.
There will be a private funeral service for the immediate family only on Wednesday, March 3,2021at:

Cherie will be interred at St Mary’s Cemetery,Yonkers,NY.
