Obituary for Iona L. Huie

It is with great sadness that the family of Iona L. Huie (Aunt Ven) announced her passing on Monday April 17, 2023. She passed away at Lawrence Hospital at 7:31pm.

Family & Friends are invited to attend the celebration of her life on Friday May 12, 2023. Visiting hours are from 4pm-8pm at Flynn Memorial Home located at 325 South Broadway, Yonkers, NY 10705. Her burial will be conducted on Saturday May 13, 2023 at Rose Hills Memorial Park, Putnam Valley, NY.

She was 87 years old. Iona was born & raised in Spicy Hill, Trelawny. She was educated at Duncans All Age School and attended Stratford High School, Kingston, where she studied Shorthand.

Iona worked various jobs throughout her young life. She acquired one of her dreams of becoming a business owner in 1966, when she started running her own shop. This was her passion, for she loved cooking as much as people enjoyed eating her cooking.

She migrated to the U.S. in the 70’s. While living in Yonkers, she held various jobs such as a CNA at Lockwood Nursing Home where she worked from the 1970’s until she retired in 2011. She also worked at Graham Windham Children’s Home for numerous years.

Iona was a dedicated daughter, niece, sister, aunt, cousin, mother and grandmother. She treasured her relationships with her family and friends. She had a vivacious personality and always made people around her laugh or mad. She made friends everywhere she went even at the Nursing Home where she worked. She always spoke fondly of the patients she took care of.

She is the loving and devoted daughter of the late Bernice and Nehemiah Hall. She is predeceased by her brother Ewan Washington, Sisters Gloria Hall-Black, Daphne Eccleston and nephew Lester Forde. She is survived by her Sister Joycelyn Stewart and Brother Owen Hall.
She left to mourn her daughter Claudia Huie, grandson Richard Simmonds Jr., Nieces Inez Richards-Gordon, Rhena Richards, and numerous other relatives and friends here in the U.S., England and Jamaica.

We will miss not having Aunt Ven to call, asking her to cook, or seeing her tending to her garden. She is now in a much better place, with no pain, no worries, and having a great time reuniting with her family wherever they are.
