Obituary for Joseph Marrero
Joseph Marrero, known as Jay, was born in Manhattan, NY on August 4, 1941 to Celia and Joseph Marrero, he was one of five children. He passed away on March 27, 2020 at the age of 78. He was a resident of Yonkers, NY, where he and his beautiful wife have lived since buying their house in 1975. Jay is survived by his wife of 55 years, Luisa Marrero, his two sons Joseph (aka Jay-Cee) and Chris Marrero, his brothers Rudy and Melvin, and his sister, Nilsa. He has five beautiful grandkids (Faith, Sebastian, Daniel, Olivia Rose and Gabriel) that he loved more than life itself and two daughters-in-law, Natividad and Natalia.
Growing up on 105th street in the Spanish Harlem section of Manhattan, NY, Jay was an intelligent and studious child, of Puerto Rican descent. He graduated in 1958 from Haaren High School in Midtown Manhattan. Shortly after graduating HS he joined the U.S. Navy and completed his service in 1963. Later that year he joined the NYC Police Department. Jay was one of the first Latino officers of The Tactical Patrol Force (TPF), also known as Kennedy’s Commandos. This division of the police department worked undercover investigations and riot crowd control. One of his proudest moments on the force was while working the Harlem Riots in July of 1964, where Jay delivered a baby for a woman that could not make it to the hospital. Another outstanding accomplishment of his was earning a Bachelor’s of Science in Political Science from Fordham University, while serving as an officer of the NYPD. He achieved this four-year degree in only three years. As a member of the NYPD he rose the ranks to earn the rank of Detective. As a detective, he worked on the arson and homicide squads. Upon retiring from the NYPD, he started his own private investigation company, Arawak Investigations.
Joseph was a loving and caring husband and father that always did his best to teach his boys the importance of family, love, respect and planning. He was always a person that would be the first to assist a person in need. He loved listening to Classic Salsa, Latin Jazz and Merengue music. You could usually find him reading something, as he loved to read. But his greatest love was of his family. Seeing him interact with his grandkids was more than magical. You could literally see him light up whenever he spent time with anyone of his little angels. For those that knew him, Joe will most often be remembered for his love of family.
Joseph’s funeral service will be held on Wednesday – April 15, 2020 at Flynn Memorial Home, in Yonkers. Due to the unfortunate pandemic we are currently dealing with, he will have a direct burial with no viewing. He will be laid to rest at St. Raymond’s cemetery in the Bronx, NY, alongside his parents, with only his wife, children and a few of his siblings, present. His family is planning a Celebration of Life gathering in the near future. The current plan is to host the celebration on Sunday – August 2, 2020, two days before his birthday. Needless to say, we have to wait to see how things develop with the pandemic. The alternative date will be Saturday – March 27, 2021, on the one year anniversary of his passing. His family will share the plans via social media in the future.
