Obituary for Luz Divina Franco

LUZ DIVINA FRANCO passed away peacefully in her sleep during an afternoon nap on Monday, October 19, 2020 at 2:24 p.m. – she was 82 years old. She was always a beautiful lady - elegant, loving, sharp, warm, witty and a fierce warrior.

She was born in Aguas Buenas, Puerto Rico in 1937 to Isabel Nieves and Jose Franco, raised in St. Thomas, U.S. Virgin Islands and moved to New York City in her teens. In her early twenties, she married Daniel Caraballo, a Korean War Army veteran and together they had four children: Diane, Daniel, David and Dolly.

Luz lived in Williamsburg, Brooklyn, most of her adult life. She worked as an administrative assistant in the New York City Health and Hospitals Corporation, first in the former Greenpoint Hospital and later at Woodhull Hospital, until her retirement. She loved working because it gave her the opportunity to meet and talk with different people from all walks of life, many of whom she remained friends with for the rest of her life.

She was a devout Christian and committed to giving her children a good Catholic school education – no matter what the sacrifice. She was deeply spiritual and had no doubt that her life on earth was entirely God’s Will.

Luz loved music. She delighted in dancing the nights away at the hottest Latin dance clubs, and listening to an eclectic array of music including, La Lupe, Ray Charles, Bobby Vinton, Carol King and all of the Fania All Stars. She believed in living life to the fullest, loved earnestly and was deeply loved.

Luz was a beloved mother, grandmother, great-grandmother sister and aunt. She delighted in being surrounded by her family during the holidays.
Luz is survived by:

- her children – Diane and Dolly (and her husband Dan); and
- her grandchildren, Dario (and his partner Kisha), Taima (and her husband Jason), Keith, David, Jr., Ethan, Matthew, Angel; and
- her great-grandchildren Reigna Dee and Joseph David; and
- her siblings, Ida, and Victor (and his wife Iris) – as well as numerous nieces, and nephews
- and many loving neighbors and life-long friends.

A grave site service will be held on Saturday, October 24, 2020 at 11:50 a.m. at the White Plains Rural Cemetery located at 167 N. Broadway, White Plains, New York.
