Obituary for Mannacheriel Chacko Mathai

Mannancheriel Chacko Mathai was born on July 25, 1937, in the village of Kallunkal in Kerala, India. He was the son of Mr.Varkey Chacko and Mrs.Rahelamma Chacko. He belonged to a large family and was the youngest of five siblings.

His life took a pivotal turn when he joined the Indian Army in Assam, India. He served there until he married his beloved wife Mariamma Mathai on September 14, 1967. He immigrated to the United States in October of 1972. He worked as a salesman with a tremendous work ethic and punctuality in different capacities. He was a strict, disciplined man who set an example for not only his children but future generations.

His passion and dedication to the Church was the outstanding feature of his life. He was one of the founding members of St.Mary’s Orthodox Church in the Bronx. He served as one of the first initial cabinet members of the parish. He was the first trustee to be privileged with the keys of the Church from Coorilos Thirumeni. Prayer and worship were the foundations of the life in which he was to be called to serve. He continued his mission by serving as the Westchester Prayer Group Leader for over 20 years. The importance of God and prayer in life was a message he always spread to the people around him.

Mannancheriel Chacko Mathai will always be remembered as a kind and gentle soul. He lived an amazing, rich life filled with wonderful memories. We will always feel his loving and prayerful presence around us. He spent the last weeks of his life celebrating the holidays surrounded by his family and grandchildren. He was jovial and in great spirits. His family was his pride and joy. He passed away very peacefully on January 12,2021 and will be missed very much. He is lived on by his children: Riny, Liny, Jacob, Jerry, Gigi, and Simmy. He also is survived by his grandchildren who he dearly loved: Kaitlyn, Lorraine, Meghna, Tanya, Lucas, Sana, and his fur babies Sumo, Apollo, and Taylor.
