Obituary for Mary Margaret Durkin

Mary M. Durkin of Yonkers, passed away on Tuesday, December 8, 2020, the Feast of the Immaculate Conception. She was the beloved daughter of the late Thomas and Delia (Moyles) Durkin of the Bronx. Mary was the oldest of their 5 children. She was predeceased by her sister Helen T. Durkin 4.5 years ago, she was the sister of the late Sr. Thomas Joseph, O.P. of Blauvelt (Anne Durkin), sister of Thomas Durkin of Yonkers and sister of Joan (Michael) Gibbons of Wappingers Falls, NY.

Mary was a devoted and loving Aunt to Deirdre (James) LaRosa, Michael (Kristi) Gibbons and Thomas (Rebecca) Gibbons. She so loved her niece and nephews, and was such a presence in their lives, that their friends called her Aunt Mary. She then became the cherished Great Aunt to Colin, Kaitlin, Justin, Kyle, Ava, Alison and Georgia, who brought her even more joy.

Mary took great pride in her Irish heritage and being from “the” Bronx. She loved keeping in touch with the extended family and is affectionately known as the family’s historian. She had great faith in God and was a member of St. Eugene’s parish.

Mary graduated from Walton High School in the Bronx and then went to work for Metropolitan Life Insurance in the Payroll department where she stayed until her retirement. She served as the President of her apartment building’s Co-Op Association for as long as we can remember. Her neighbors in the co-op were her second family.

Mary will be dearly missed. Please pray for her soul and the soul of her sister Anne (Sr. Thomas Joseph, OP) who passed away 5 days after she did from Covid. We plan to have a wake/funeral after the Holidays for Aunt Mary. Sr. Thomas Joseph will be buried in Blauvelt at the Mother House on Wednesday, 12/16/20. It is sadly, because of Covid, a private ceremony/burial that only the Nuns who live there are allowed to attend, a memorial mass will be held for her at a later date.

Eternal rest grant unto her soul of Lord and may perpetual light shine upon her, may her soul and the souls of the faithfully departed rest in peace, Amen.
