Obituary for Mary Jane McGahan

Mary Jane McGahan, a lifelong resident of Yonkers,NY died peacefully on October 26th,2022 while under the care of the dedicated and compassionate staff at Calvary Hospital in the Bronx, NY.

She was born in Yonkers on March 7th ,1943 and attended Saint Mary's Elementary School and Sacred Heart High School both in Yonkers. As a member of the first graduating class in1965 she earned her Bachelor of Arts degree from Mercy College in Dobbs Ferry, NY. Afterwards , Mary Jane spent 34 years teaching in Yonkers schools until she retired in 1999. She will always be remembered as a dedicated teacher who loved her students and enjoyed her role as educator.

She will also be remembered as a kind, generous, warm and very caring woman who enjoyed travel with friends and family and who sometimes ventured to Europe and Ireland on her own. She enjoyed reading, competing in Trivia games and playing slot machines in Atlantic City ,where she was often a winner. In addition, Mary Jane was very proud of her Irish roots, passionate about discovering as much as possible about her ancestors and she dedicated an enormous amount of time filling in the branches of her family tree. She was respected and loved by family, colleagues, neighbors,and many friends. It goes without saying that she was a dedicated daughter, niece,sister,aunt,cousin and friend. To know her was to love her.

Predeceasing her were her parents Richard and Dorothy (Bird) McGahan. She is survived by her brother Richard (Penny), nephews Kevin (Naheed) and Christopher (Guta), niece Angela Martin, grand nieces Parisa,Lucille,Felice , grand nephew Declan and many loving cousins.

She was a contributor to various charities one of which was Calvary Hospital where she received wonderful care. In memory and in lieu of flowers her family suggests donations may be made to:
