Mr. Melvin Smith, 70, heard his heavenly call on Sunday, November 6, 2022 at St. John Hospital Yonkers, New York.
Melvin was born to the union of Laura (Ly-boy) and Margaret (Thompson) Smith in Surry, Virginia on November 19, 1951. He was educated in Surry County School System in Surry, Virginia. Melvin worked on the farm, he worked at Smithfield Packing Company in Smithfield, Virginia. Then he left Virginia to pursue opportunities in New York to help his uncle in his cleaning business. Cleaning became his passion which influenced his employment at Regency Extended Care Center formally known as Hudson Nursing Home in housekeeping for 47 years.
Melvin accepted Christ at a young age at Mount Nebo Baptist Church in Surry, Virginia. Even though he lived in New York, he loved home. He traveled several time a year to Surry, Virginia. He will always be remembered as daddy, brother, uncle, papa and for his sweet sense of humor.
Melvin leaves to mourn his passing: his wife, Mamie Rawals Smith, of 48 years; one son, Kristian Smith of Mount Vernon, New York; one daughter, Katrina Smith of Yonkers New York; one grandson, Kayson Smith, of Stamford, Connecticut; six sisters, Lucy Smith, Brenda Charity, Ruth Smith, Grace White (Milton), all of Surry, Virginia, Katherine Blunt (Joe) of Smithfield, Virginia and Girldine Bailey (James) of Newport News, Virginia; one aunt-in-law, Ruby Smith, of Newport News, Virginia; a host of nieces; nephews; relatives and friends.
Melvin was preceded in death by his parents, Laura (Ly-boy) and Margaret (Thompson) Smith; two brothers, Arthur Smith and Larry Smith, Jr.; three sisters Fannie Cypress, Mildred Smith and Carolyn Smith.
