Obituary for Ronnie L Lewis

Ronnie Lewis was born on August 22, 1937. She was the first-born child to Luvinia Rose Gatlin and Milton Gatlin, Sr. She was born in Harlem Hospital and for many years attended P.S.90 on 147th Street. She graduated from Commerce High School.

Ronnie believed in glamour. She loved dressing in the latest styles. She could frequently be seen wearing her high heels and leather outfits. Her first car was a green mustang and she enjoyed riding in it around the neighborhood. On one hand she was be a glamour queen, in dress and hair style. On the other hand, she shied away from pictures and untoward attention. This made her behavior a lovable contradiction.

Ronnie’s first job was at the defunct S. Klein’s Department store. She later worked for decades at Queens General Hospital, where she made many friends and acquaintances. She was instrumental in assisting many people apply and receive the Medicaid assistance needed to secure medical care. This career gave her the opportunity to display her genuine empathy for those in need. Her frequent response to people was “I LOVE YOU MORE.”

In her final months, Ronnie was able to achieve a goal she had sought for many years. She was able to acquire her own small apartment and live independently.

Ronnie leaves behind her beloved daughter and confident, Diane Lewis. She is predeceased by her grandson Allan Michael Lock. She also leaves her sister, Sheila Gatlin and niece Candice Meyers, brother Milton Gatlin II and spouse Jackie Gatlin, nieces, and nephews Cedeno Gatlin, Milton Gatlin III, Gregory Gatlin, and Geraldine Gatlin, Camille and Lori Lewis. Great nieces include Starr Iturralde, Corey Sumpter and Skyye Sumpter and their children, which are her great-great nieces and nephews. Cousins Linda Batson Butler and daughters Michelle and Kimberly. Her long-term friend Harriet Williams and her in-laws, Alfred Lewis, Ellen Haywood, Myrna Lewis, Wayne Lewis, Cassandra Simmons, and numerous other friends.
