Obituary

Our Ammachi

Sosamma Thomas, lovingly known as ‘Ammachi,’ was born on April 10, 1920 in Manarkad, Kerala, India. She was one of eight children born to Eapen and Mariamma of the Pattanmaruparambil family.

She was married to P.A. Thomas of the Punnamattathil family and they had seven children: Ammini, Kunjukunju, Thankachan, Kunjamma, Kunjumon, Raju, and Sunny. The family was settled in Pampady Kottayam and later on moved to Kanchiyar, Idukki. There, they owned a farm and grew to love farming. Ammachi was a woman who exemplified Proverbs 31:
“She gets up while it was still night; she provides food for her family and portions for her female servants… she sets about her work vigorously; her arms are strong for her tasks… she opens her arms to the poor and extends her hands to the needy.”

Her husband was promoted to glory in 1969. She met her Lord and Savior Jesus Christ around that time as well. A trying time, Ammachi courageously took care of her family alone and raised her children to be strong willed and God fearing like she was. Her son, Kunjumon, immigrated to the United States after marrying and later brought his mother in 1981 to join him in Chicago. All of her children moved to the states by 2002, and later her oldest daughter, decided to stay back in India. Ammachi lived in and out of the United States until 1995. She lived in many different states until she settled in New York with her son’s family in Scarsdale, living there for the past 24 years. She was a member of Yonkers Church of God, though for last couple of years she was homebound and unable to attend the church.

Ammachi made everyone around her feel special. She loved being around her children and grandchildren and her presence made every event and milestone that much more special. She had a beautiful smile that brightened up the room and a gentle laugh that made everyone happy. Ammachi was blessed with 100 years in this world and was able to see multiple generations within her family. She aged gracefully and in her last days was surrounded by her loved ones in prayer before being called up to be with the Lord peacefully in her sleep.

She is survived by her children: Mariam (Ammini) and Pastor A.A. Philipose, Kottayam; P.T. Abraham (Kunjukunju) and Mariamma (Ammini), Texas; P.T. Andrews (Thankachan) and Aleyamma (Moni), Florida; Sosamma (Kunjamma) and P.I. Joseph (Sunny), Connecticut; Kuriakose Thomas (Kunjumon) and Annamma (Kunjumol), Florida; Thomas Punnamattathil (Raju) and Mini, New York; Varghese Punnamattathil (Sunny) and Daisy, New York. She is also survived by two of her sisters in India. She was blessed with sixteen grandchildren, twenty-two great grandchildren, and three great-great grandchildren.
Ammachi will be truly missed but she leaves behind a legacy of faith, strength and love that will live on forever.

“Brothers and Sisters, we do not want you to be uninformed about those who sleep in death, so that you do not grieve like the rest of mankind, who have no hope. For we believe that Jesus Died and rose again, and so we believe that God will bring with Jesus those who have fallen asleep in him.”
